Mining happiness, or mining lies? You decide.

  1. I was reading news today that the Minister for Mines, India is going to Canada next week to invite Canadian companies to India. Apparently he's going to promise a lot of mining leases to these companies. Interestingly, I also read news about Coal mining in West Virginia. Now that many coal mines have run out and companies have closed, its going to cost the state $1.5 Billion to clean up the mess left behind. Apparently thats more than what the state earned from mining royalties. As for the 'employment' this was going to bring in, well thats all gone now that the mines have closed, leaving an estimated 22,000 jobless. Its hard to see any benefits from mining, especially in India where most of what they want is in our jungles. I agree with everything you have put in your cartoon and will RT on twitter. Hope many more see this blog.

  2. we just wrapped an issue on mining. the situation is so truly bleak. i wonder if the few of us are sane or insane.

  3. the mining sector is one in which the worst features of capitalism as a profit machine combine with illegality and corruption. No wonder, violence is on the rise around the mining belt of the country
